代表作『ねじ式（Screw Style）』（1968年）は、夢体験をもとに描かれた観念的な作品で、芸術としてのマンガの可能性を大きく広げました。また、『無能の人（The Man Without Talent）』（1985年）は後期の作品で、多摩川の河原で石を売ろうとする売れない漫画家を主人公とし、人間の尊厳や無力さを描いた作品です。

Rather than relying on flashy action, he explored surreal landscapes, the quiet daily lives of people living with a sense of alienation from society, and strangers wandering through lonely hot-spring towns and deserted streets, depicting absurdities, solitude, and melancholy.
His representative masterpiece, Neji-shiki (Screw Style, 1968), based on an actual dream experience, was an abstract work that greatly expanded the possibilities of manga as a fine art form. Another late masterpiece, Muno no Hito (The Man Without Talent, 1985), follows an unsuccessful manga artist trying to sell stones on the dry bed of the Tama River—a profound work depicting human dignity and helplessness.
