日本では8月13日〜16日にお盆を迎えます。先祖の霊を自宅へ迎える「迎え火」で始まり、16日夜に再びあの世へ送る道標として焚かれるのが「送り火」です。
全国にある送り火の中でも、京都の「五山送り火」は山全体をキャンバスにした壮大なスケールで知られています。盆地を囲む山々に浮かび上がる炎の巨画は、まさに闇の中に現れる美しく幻想的なアートです。

Obon is observed in Japan from August 13 to 16. It begins with welcoming fires (mukaebi) to invite ancestral spirits home, and ends on the night of the 16th with send-off fires (okuribi) to guide them safely back to the afterlife.
Among various okuribi nationwide, Kyoto's Gozan no Okuribi is famous for its grand scale, using entire mountains as a canvas. The giant fiery symbols glowing against the dark basin create a breathtakingly mystical display of land art.
For generations, local preservation societies have maintained this tradition by hauling firewood up steep slopes and passing down ignition techniques. Today, however, the event faces serious challenges, including an aging population, a shortage of successors, and environmental changes. Kept alive by deep spiritual faith and grueling community efforts, these blazes in the dark shine all the more precious and poignant.
