(Japanese Text)

[The Scientific Name "Nipponia nippon" and the Traditional Color "Toki-iro"]

The Crested Ibis carries the scientific name Nipponia nippon, making it a unique bird with Japan's name embedded in its taxonomy. It features a brilliant white body and delicate, pale pink feathers beneath its wings when taking flight. This exquisite hue inspired "Toki-iro" (Ibis pink), a traditional Japanese color. While they once soared across Japan in abundance, overhunting and habitat destruction starting in the Meiji period drastically reduced their population, pushing the species to the brink of extinction.

[History: From Extinction Crisis Back to Mainland Skies]

In 1970, the last wild Crested Ibis in the Noto region was captured, marking its temporary disappearance from the wild on Japan's mainland. Subsequently, the last five remaining wild ibises on Sado Island were brought into captivity. Captive breeding took off in 1999 with a pair gifted by China. Releases on Sado Island began in 2008, leading to successful wild breeding by 2012. Building on Sado's established acclimatization and monitoring protocols, May 2026 saw the first mainland release in Hakui City after roughly 56 years. This latest release in Nakanoto marks another major milestone.

[The Crested Ibis Restoration Project Spreading Beyond Noto]

With 27 ibises now released across Ishikawa Prefecture, hopes are high for wild establishment and breeding in Noto's rich satoyama ecosystem. With another release planned in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture for 2027, Japan is steadily advancing toward a future where these iconic birds gracefully grace the skies once again.
